Water heater repair or replace: include fuel and installation changes
A water-heater replacement price may leave out the work needed to connect a different unit. Start with the failed component and whether a safe repair is feasible. For each replacement bid, record capacity, fuel type, venting or electrical changes, plumbing work, disposal, and the full amount you would pay.
Separate a failed part from a fuel or vent change
- Ask whether the fault is in a replaceable part, a connection, or the tank itself, and request the test or inspection behind that finding.
- Check the installed scope separately from the appliance price. A fuel change or heat-pump water heater can require additional work not captured by a headline price.
- Only subtract a rebate after confirming it applies to the proposed model, your household, and the state program. Do not use a general maximum as an actual credit.

A missing cell means the quote has not said. Ask whether that work is excluded or will be priced later. Do not treat a blank as included.

Questions for the plumber
- Which component failed, and is a repair technically sound?
- Are venting, drain, or electrical modifications included?
- Which exact rebate has been confirmed in writing?
Compare the repair with the installed water heater
The installed price has to include fuel, vent, and plumbing changes. Enter the repair quote even if the replacement price is still blank, and keep each proposal's rebate on its own line.
