HVAC repair or replace: start with the written diagnosis

When heating or cooling fails, the first useful comparison is not equipment age versus a generic replacement price. It is the cost of a diagnosed repair, the cash due for a fully installed alternative, and the work each quote actually covers. The worksheet keeps the decision open when you have only one quote and updates it when more information arrives.

Start with the failed component

Ask which component failed and what test established that diagnosis. A repair price without that answer may not address the underlying problem.
Check manufacturer, installer, and service warranties before treating the quoted repair total as your out-of-pocket cost.
If you have a replacement proposal, compare its installed total and exclusions with the repair—not just the sticker price of the equipment. Repeated faults and comfort problems warrant a broader system assessment.

HVAC scope that has to be written down

A missing cell means the quote has not said. Ask whether that work is excluded or will be priced later. Do not treat a blank as included.

What test confirmed the failed part, and will this repair resolve the complaint?
How was the proposed replacement sized for this house rather than chosen by a rule of thumb?
Which work would trigger a change order after installation begins?
