Compare HVAC quotes without mixing price and scope

Three HVAC bids are only directly comparable when they describe substantially the same installed work. Enter each total, its own confirmed rebate, and its own stated savings in a separate proposal. Then mark which scope items are actually written down. The worksheet shows net cash due and lets you choose a proposal to compare with repairing.

What changes the answer?

  • Check the make and exact model of indoor and outdoor equipment, capacity, and the sizing method. Similar-sounding systems can differ in what is supplied.
  • Read the installation scope: ducts, electrical, permits, removal, startup tests, and labor warranty. Record exclusions instead of assuming they are included.
  • If one quote is much lower, ask what explains the difference. The FTC recommends multiple written estimates and warns against automatically choosing the lowest bidder.

Check the written proposal

Look for these items in each quote. If one is missing, ask whether it is excluded or will be priced later.

  • Equipment models and home-specific sizing
  • All labor and materials, permit, removal, and inspection
  • Performance tests, exclusions, schedule, and labor warranty

Questions to take back to the contractor

  1. Which line item explains the price difference between these bids?
  2. What change orders could increase the amount I actually pay?
  3. What measurements and documents will I receive when installation is complete?
